How Venetian Blinds Work

Venetian blinds have a number of single individual blinds which we call slats. The slats are parallel and of equal distance to the other slats. These slats when pulled can turn in unison at the same direction, determining the amount of light that passes through.

Venetian Window Blinds have on average 2 inch or 1 inch wide slats. A lift cord is inserted and run through a routed hole in the center of each blind slat, or with some Venetian blinds, the lift cords run though lift ladders or even in tiny slits made at the back of each slat. So when you tug on the cord, it lifts up all the slats starting from the bottom going up.

Blinds Wide Open

Venetian Blinds are actually quite versatile, unlike Roman blinds that cover a partial space of top window. With Venetian Blinds, you can roll the slats all the way up to the top, making full use of your window.

Venetian Blinds in the Movies

Venetian Blinds are the stuff of cinema.

If you're a production designer you may very well know that Venetian Blinds are a staple with detective dramas, crime thrillers, classic noir films.

Or even anxious adolescent teen flicks where you have the protagonist spying on the next door neighbor.

Who can blame them for using Venetian Blinds? They provide great lighting opportunity for cinematographers- you can have total morning light or have a dark room in seconds. Or have a protagonist's face lit through the Venetian blinds. In Noir films, you can find a detective lifting one slat up the Venetian blinds and spy whosoever on the street. Pretty nifty, ey?

What are Venetian Blinds?

Venetian Blinds are the most popular of all the window blinds ever invented. They are made up of individual slats manage by a pull-cord; Once the cord is pulled, a control pulley at the top fixture would open all the slats simultaneously.

One may not know they're called "Venetian Blinds" but once you see them, you can't help, but say, "Oh those things!"

You see them in average homes, in movies involving stakeouts and in cheap plastic replicas in Home Improvement stores.

So if they have such a reputation for being a mediocre and cheap kind of window treatment- why even go for Venetian Blinds?

Because Venetian Blinds can actually look dramatic and opulent.

That is, if you consider making an investment with properly fitted and sturdy Venetian Blinds. For now, do avoid the bargain bins and the plastic ones, they won't do your home any justice.
